How to avoid losses on a 3 card poker table

One game I used to play a lot was 3 card poker.  Most of the time I either pushed or won because I had a pair or better, but I never really won hands I didn't have a pair or better because the dealer didn't have a qualifying hand.

They want you to play the bonus hands.  They want you to think you'll get a big payout when you bet the bonuses and in return I wasn't seeing a big payout when I played the bonus hands.  I was actually either seeing a push or a loss depending how I wagered my money.

On a table that has the max bet of $25 a hand you want to place your money on the ante and only a percentage of that on the bonus hands.  This is because you probably will end up defeating the dealer and this way you can still make money on your hands that you weren't winning on the bonus hands.  The reason why I would do this is because lets say I only have ace high and the dealer doesn't have at least a queen I'd still beat the dealer and now I would actually win money vs those who play the same amount of money on both the bonus and the ante they wouldn't win money on that hand.

Three card poker is supposed to be the player against the dealer, but most players try and hit on the bonuses way too many times and forget to think that it's supposed to be the player vs the dealer.

It's okay to have some money on the pair plus and the six card bonus but you have to remember your money is won when you defeat the dealer's hand.

Come Bet

If you've been reading my blog on craps you'll know what the pass line bet.  The reason why I say this is because the come bet is almost identical to the pass line bet. In order to make this bet the point has to be established on the come out roll.  Once the point is established on the come out roll you may then place a come bet.

In this picture the point has been established as nine.  We may now place our come bet.  The come bet will be placed in that big area where the word come is on.
To win this bet right away you need a 7 or an 11.  Too loose this bet right away you need a 2, 3, or a 12.  Once a box number is rolled it's the point that you need before a 7.  If that point is rolled then you win your come bet.  If the 7 is rolled before the established point then you loose your come bet.

On this picture I made a couple come bets.  The 2 established points that have been made are 5 and 8.  In order for me to win these come bets I need a 5 before rolling a 7 and an 8 before rolling a 7.  I also placed another come bet.  To win that come bet I need a 7 or 11 before the point is established.  I loose right away if the 2, 3, or 12 is made.  Once the point is established I need to roll that roll before rolling the seven.
Like the pass line bet the come bet is a contract bet so you need to roll the point in order to win the come bet.

To recap the come bet the come bet may be placed once the point is established on the come out roll.  The come bet wins on a 7 or an 11 and looses on a 2, 3, or 12.  Once the come point is made that point must be rolled before a seven in order to win or a seven before the point in order to loose.  The come bet is also a contract bet like the pass line bet so you cannot take the bet down once the point is established.

Odds Behind The Don't Pass Bar

So, you want to win more money on the don't pass bar eh?  Well, you came to the right spot, I mean Dark Side Spot haha.  What?  We're betting on the dark side so if you think about it it's the dark side spot.  Okay, now for ways to win on the dark side spot.  To make more money on the don't pass bar you need to lay odds on the don't pass bar once the point is established.

So, we have our don't pass bar bet.  In order to win right now we need a 2 or a 3 to hit.  In order to push we need a 12.  If a 7 or an 11 is rolled before the point is established we loose our don't pass bar bet.  Once the point is established we may lay odds behind the don't pass bar bet.  Some casinos will have you lay the odds next to the don't pass bar bet.

As you can see here the point is 6.  If the point is a 6 or an 8 we would need increments of $6 to win increments of $5.  If the point is a 4 or a 10 we would need even money because it would pay out $1 for every $2.  If the point is a 5 or a 9 we would need increments of $3 and we would get paid in increments of $2.  Now, remember in order to win on the don't pass bar once the point is established you need a 7 before the point is hit.  That is why the payouts aren't as much as placing odds behind the pass line.  Placing and laying odds behind the pass line and the don't pass bar pays true odds.  That's the amount of times to roll the point vs rolling the seven or rolling the seven vs rolling the point.

You now know how to win more on the don't pass bar by laying odds behind the don't pass bar bet.

Odds Behind The Pass Line Bet

So, you want to know how to make more money on the pass line?  Well, you came to the right article.  In this post I will show you how to make more money with a pass line bet.

As you can see in the picture up above we have our bet on the pass line.  We already know that we need a 7 or an 11 to win on this bet.  If a 2, 3, or a 12 is rolled we loose.  Once a point is established we can do something to make us more money on this bet.  Now, if we loose the bet it would be like loosing more money.  That's the warning I give you, but if would like to make more money on a craps table I would recommend this bet.

As you can see the point that has been established is the 9.  Now that the point is established we can make a bet called the odds bet.  The odds bet is a good bet because the odds bet pays the true odds.  Say you're a good dice shooter who hits a lot of points or you're betting on a shooter who hits a lot of points this would be a good bet to make.  The true odds are possibilities to hit the point in relation to hit the seven.  For the 4 or 10 the true odds would pay $2 for every $1 because the possibilities of the 7 to the 4 or 10 is 6 times to 3 times.  6 times to roll a 7 and 3 times to roll a 4.  3 times to roll a 10.  There are 4 ways to roll a 5 and 4 ways to roll a 9 compared to 6 times to roll a 7, so the true odds on the 5 or 9 would pay $3 for every $2.  There are 5 ways to roll a 6 and 5 ways to roll an 8 compared to 6 ways to roll a 7, so the true odds on the 6 or 8 would pay $6 for every $5.

So, the point is 9 we would win even money on the pass line bet which is $3 and the 3 to 2 on the odds behind the pass line which would be $9.  So, if the point is rolled here we would win a total of $12.  Not bad considering we only had $9 on the table.

You now know how the odds behind the pass line bet works.

Don't Pass Line

The game of craps is begun by the guy in the center of the table with a stick pushing a set of five or six dice to the shooter and the shooter will choose 2 of these dice.  The shooter must have a bet on either the pass line or the don't pass line.  The shooter will then throw the dice to the opposite end of the table.  This begins the game of craps.  Since you know about how the pass line bet works I want to show you the don't pass line bet and how it works.

This is called a don't pass line bet.  As you can see here the point has not yet been established.  To win this bet before the point is established the shooter must roll a 2 or a 3.  The 12 is considered a push.  In a couple casinos the 12 or 3 wins and the 2 pushes.  It really depends on the casino, but most casinos have it where the 2 wins and the 12 pushes.  On the come out roll the 7 or 11 looses.

Once one of the box numbers is rolled that box number becomes the point.  If you've been following or reading any posts before this you would see the pass line bettors would want the point to be rolled before the 7, but not us.  We as the dark side bettors or people with a bet on the don't pass line would actually want the 7 to be rolled before the established point is rolled.  In my first article I showed the odds for each number.  If you think about it this way you have a 24/36 chances to establish the point and only a 6/36 chances to roll the seven.  Once the point is established the odds go into your favor as you have a 6/36 chance to roll a seven and anywhere from either a 3/36 chance with the 4 and 10, a 4/36 with the 5 and 10, and a 5/36 chance with the 6 and 8.  You see why the smarter players on the craps table would bet the don't pass.  a 6/36 chances are a lot greater than any other of the numbers to roll again.

So, as you can see in the picture the 6 is the established point.  In order to win here the 7 must be rolled before the 6 in order for the don't pass bar to win.  If the 6 is rolled before the 7 the pass bar looses.

Now that you know about the pass line and the don't pass bar bets you have the basic basic part of the game down.  This week I will teach you about the come bet and the don't come bets.

Pass Line Bet

In the previously 2 articles you have seen the odds for each number and you have seen what a layout of a craps table looks like.  Now, I'm going to start teaching you about the different bets that you can make on a craps table.  Today, I'm going to teach you what the pass line bet is.  The pass line is very simple and it's the bet that the majority of craps players will make.  In craps there are right side bets and dark side bets and this would be consider a right side bet.  I'll get to that in another article.

Now, to the beginning of craps.  The game begins with the stickman pushing a set of five dice to the shooter.  The shooter will pick 2 of those dice and throw them across the table.  In order for the player to shoot the dice, the player must have a bet on the pass line or the don't pass line.  I'll get to the don't pass line in the next article.  Right now, we're on the pass line.  Now, to the shooter.  The shooter will pick up the dice and throw them across the table.  This is called the come out roll. Since I'm on the pass line bet I'll be explaining how the pass line bet works.  On the come out roll if the shooter rolls a 7 or an 11 the pass line bet wins.  But, if the shooter rolls a 2, a 3, or a 12 the pass line bet looses.  Once the shooter rolls a box number which are 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 that box number becomes the point and the shooter must hit that box number before the seven is rolled in order to win.  For example, if the shooter rolls a 6 on the come out roll the 6 becomes the point and the shooter must roll a 6 before the 7 in order to win on the pass line.  Once the point has been established the only numbers that can effect the pass line bet is the point and the seven.  If the seven is rolled before the point is rolled after the point is established the pass line bet looses.  If the point is rolled before the seven the pass line bet wins.

Let me show you bets and how they would win for the pass line.
As you can see up above I have a bet on the pass line.  Since the point has not been established the numbers that would win would be a 7 or an 11.  The numbers that would loose would be a 2, a 3, or a 12.
As you can see up above there is a puck that says on.  The puck that says on is on the 10.  That means that the 10 is the point.  If the 10 is rolled before the seven because the 10 is the point the pass line wins.  If the seven is rolled before the 10 the pass line bet looses.

Here's a recap of the pass line bet.

  • Come out roll is the roll before the point is established.
  • 7 or 11 wins on the come out roll.
  • 2, 3, 12 looses on the come out roll.
  • Box number rolled becomes the point (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10)
  • Point rolled before the seven wins
  • 7 rolled before the point looses.

Craps table layout

Below is a layout of a craps table.

This table is very basic.  In the middle of the craps table you have the stickman on one side and the box man on the other side.  The stickman usually calls the number and gives the dice to the shooter.  He is also in charge of the bets on the middle of the table.  The Boxman, who is on the other side of the stickman supervises the game and makes sure that no bets are mishandled.  On the side of the boxman you have the dealers.  The dealers are responsible for paying out winnings and taking down losses.

I'm not going to get into betting on this article, I'm just going to tell you about the table.
One the perimeter of the table you'll usually see a bunch of people surrounding the craps table.  Well on the side of the table is called the pass line.  Above the pass line is the don't pass line, Above the don't pass line is called a the field bet.  Above the field bet is called the Come bet.  At the top of the layout is call the point numbers, which are also called the box numbers.  On the upper corner is called the don't come box.

On the layout next to the come bet, field bet, don't pass line, and pass line is called the e/c bet or what most people call the c/e bet.  On the layout in front of the stickman are what I called the crazy craps layout.  I'll explain why it's crazy in another article.  Right infront of the stickman you have the any seven.  Above the any seven you have the horn bets, which are the 2, 3, 11, and the 12.  You also will see the 2, 3, 11, and the 12 in each box.  Above the horn numbers you'll have the hard way boxes.  You have the hard six, the hard eight, the hard four, and the hard ten.  On most tables above the hard boxes you'll have the hop boxes.  Above the hop boxes are usually other forms of bettings on a craps table.  Some games you'll see a fire bet, other games you'll see a sharp shooter bet, and on some games you'll see a craps bonus bet.  I'll get to those bets along with their payouts in another article.

In front of the boxman you have all of the chips on the craps table which are always organized.
